About Ginny
Interviewing a teacher
heads UP flutists!

I still like this logo image: meet "Hoot" a working bird who was the live model for the Weasley's owl in the original Harry Potter movie. He (Hoot) is quite tame and permits strangers to hold him and snuggle with him. I met and played with him on two of my trips to Park City where he lives with his human. He hunts each night for his food and returns home.  One of "us" has visited the new attraction in Orlando! Lucky girl!

CHINS down!
(as in, don't look up and reach for high notes!)

Our Collaborative Artist is Paul Switzler. Pianists used to be called accompanists. The integral nature of sonatas leads us to appreciate the ensemble requirements of the pianist-collaborator. Paul is also an exceptional coach and it is very satisfying to "team-teach" with him. We are rarely afforded the opportunity to enlist accompanists who lead students to create and evaluate as part of the process of learning music and preparing performance. Paul is a treasure.

Master Flute Technician Paul Rabinov is located conveniently in the Crescenta Valley.

Purchasing or renting a flute:
Always obtain the advice of your teacher before acquiring a flute. It may seem like a good idea to get first the flute and then the teacher, but understand that one of the things your teacher will advise you about it what size and design is just right for you and how to avoid a lamentable purchase. Generally, if the price is "too good to be true" or if you can't see the flute, play the flute yourself or take it to the teacher or to your flute tech for approval, resist the purchase.
Old Town Music in Pasadena is a respected source of student flutes.

Specifically for flutists: you'll love her template for fingerings. Jennifer offers many free tools.

Other ways to access the world of music making, is with parent permission, and if they require it, their supervision, is to Google the name of a composer or institution or genre (type of music). There will be many threads and links that will be both entertaining and illuminating. For instance, Greg Patillo (internet sensation flute-cello-bass beatbox ensemble) appeared at the recent NFA convention in Anaheim. But don't despair, if you missed them, there is another local opportunity in February. Go to www.laco.org to see when and where!

Let's share the new sites we like the best.

I look forward to hearing from you!
